SIM 101: The Basics of Developing Strategic Intervention Materials for Classroom Use

by: J. Policarpio

Due to a considerable number of hits about my post, "Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM): A Closer Look" which tackled some of the pointers mentioned by the judges during the time we joined the Regional Competition and to some e-mails inquiring on how to develop SIM for classroom and also for competition... let's try to discuss a little about the basic of developing a SIM.

What is a SIM?

Is SIM just another name for a Module? If not, what's the difference?

Do I need SIM in my class? Based on the definition above, definitely yes! So, let's try doing our own. What are the basic parts of a SIM?

Let's start with the Guide Card.

Next is the Activity Card,

Since the Activity Card is the heart of the SIM, what are some pointers that we have to consider in formulating Activities for Activity Card?

Now, to test whether our Activities are effective in teaching the concept, the next part which is the Assessment Card is also equally important.

The next part is the Reference Card,

We must also provide some enrichment activities that may extend the learning-process,

So here's the key points;

So, what will be my topic?

To sum it up, here are some important points that we should always consider.

Now, consider also that your SIM is intended for individualized instruction with minimal or no supervision of a teacher at all. Make it interactive, as if you were talking to the student using your SIM.

Good luck guys and let's do it for the benefit of our students.

Thank you very much to my References:

  8. Actually, SIM should be accompanied with a Classroom-Based Research. I would say, that developing a SIM requires time and effort. It's actually re-teaching the concept (just one topic) which turned out to be the LEAST MASTERED SKILL after a certain test/examination is administered. Developing a SIM would require you to develop also activities in which performing such would increase students' mastery about that topic.

  9. saan poh ba ilalagay ung mga info tungkol s topic ?? sa intro o sa enrichment .. kc poh high school poh ako .. pinapapagawa kmi ng SIM at nalilito kmi ..

    ReplyDelete
  10. what do you mean po? ung intro po kc ang laman nya is the objective and overview of your SIM... ung enrichment naman is some exercises needed to extend the learning... kung discussion po ang ibig mong sabihin, dun po un sa activity card... gagawin mo po xa in the form of activity...

  12. I would like to ask what about those topics which is very abstract the students must have to perform the activities.is it possible or right that they would prepare materials so they can perform the activity like doing experimentation.

  14. Thanks for visiting my blog fellow educators spec. to Math Teacher from Agusan del Sur.

For those topics which are mostly abstract, you have to think of an activity that can be visualized... just like what we are doing inside the classroom when we teach, we explain abstract ideas using analogy with concrete things that can be seen or can be imagined.

  16. the guide card contains the objectives that you want to attain, no need to add anything just the objectives to make it simple and easy to understand.

  23. Thank You very much for visiting!

For those students who were asked to create a SIM... it's a good opportunity for you to be involved in creating instructional materials at your own level or should I say perspective. At your own level, just enjoy doing it and you will surely master the given topic or lesson.

  30. Hello po...i joined for the second time around for this school year for the SIM division level...so sad to tell i was second place last year..and I hoping this school year to make it for the first place.. I hope judges from my division will know also the key points in making the SIM so that they will not mislead the participants in doing it..

  31. I think in order for you to know if the SIM is effective, there is a need for pre test and post.Like you you have to assign groups of students who would use the SIM and those who would not.after the intervention to know its effectiveness a post test is necessary..coz what's the use of implementing it if its not effective?
    have u done it?

This time, I'm helping a MAEd student in her thesis and I'm looking for the possibility of developing a SIM for elementary mathematics. Pwede po bang iUPLOAD niyo rin yung mga references niyo for this blog para maging mas comprehensive po ang research namin. please lang po. Salamat

  49. I read your two blogs about SIM and I wondered what is the difference between SIM as "an instructional material intended to reteach topics which are considered as Least Mastered" and "an instructional materials meant to re-teach concepts and skills". It bothers me because topics, as presented, is for modules and skills are for SIMs. My question is: Did I misunderstood SIM?

  56. The advantage of employing a multi-network M2M SIM is merely aren’t settled to one organized. Multi-network SIMs grant you the capacity to wander systems on a directed or non-steered premise. A directed roaming SIM would continuously default to one essential organize indeed on the off chance that a distant better; a much better; a higher; a stronger; an improved" an improved flag is available.
