What is Project DAHON

Project DAHON: An Advocacy

What is Project DAHON?

Launched Date: 18 December 2013.

Project DAHON stands for Developing Awareness as Human Obligation to Nature. It is an advocacy aiming for a greater impact on the lifestyle of every energy consumer and carbon dioxide emitters.

Specifically this advocacy aims to;

1. develop functional awareness about energy efficiency and conservation
2. mold responsible energy consumer
3. promote effective and realistic solutions in mitigating the effects of climate change
4. adapt best practices in energy conservation

Our Commitment

The big word today is CLIMATE CHANGE... and we have to do something about it, before it's too late...

This project was conceptualized in response to the training conducted by the Center for Sustainable Human Development - Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Education (DepEd) held on Hotel Kimberly, Tagaytay City last November 28-30, 2013, entitled  Facilitators' Training on Energy Efficiency and Conservation: Usapang Climate Change. The teachers who attended the above-mentioned seminar will serve as the Advisers of the Committee.

Project DAHON is an environmental awareness campaign in which the main role players are high school students through the guidance of their Science Teachers (Advisers). The ultimate goal of the Project is to develop the value of environmental awareness to students at their young age. The academe is the best venue for this goal because of its multiplier effect. Every little act done for the environment counts and we must practice it for it to become a habit and eventually a way of life.

Project DAHON Committee works hand-in-hand with the existing Science Organizations in the School such as the Youth for Environment and School Organization (YES-O) and National Ecosavers Program (NEP). The success of the launching of Project DAHON becomes possible primarily because of the support of our School Head, Science Supervisor, Science Department Head, Science Teachers (PNHS-Main) and of course the warm acceptance of the students.

Project DAHON: Looking Back

by: Jaytee

Greenphysics then...

As early as 2009, Science Teachers (Science Department of PNHS-Main) have already been promoting our commitment to our environment.

Prior to Project DAHON, in my handled sections of senior students I've introduced 'greenphysics.' Greenphysics is an advocacy for our environment which started in the 2nd week of December 2009 in response to a directive to integrate Environmental Lessons to all Science subjects (including Physics). This was a collaborative effort of the students with the guidance of their Science Teacher with the ultimate goal of DOING something (not just talking) FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT.

Our advocacy then was called 'Greenphysics' primarily because we have integrated Environmental Lessons to Physics topics. This advocacy was promoted not only in my science classes but also online through greenphysics.multiply.com. (This address has already expired after multiply.com ceased to operate.)  The scope of 'Greenphysics' is limited only to my handled sections during that time. Students working in groups (composed of 6 to 7 members) were instructed to find a suitable place to plant one tree per group. They have planted during the 1st Semester of the School Year and as their output, they have to write a blog monthly to give an update of the growth of their tree as well as their experiences in doing such. The name of their blog is also their 'group name' and each blog entry must be accompanied by a picture of their tree.

Project DAHON now!

Project DAHON History
The big word today is CLIMATE CHANGE... and we have to do something about it, before it's too late...

Last November 28-30, 2013, the Center for Sustainable Human Development - Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Education (DepEd) held a training about Energy Efficiency and Conservation (Facilitators' Training on Energy Efficiency and Conservation: Usapang Climate Change) at Hotel Kimberly, Tagaytay City. The training was attended by 4 Science Teachers in our Division, 2 teachers were from our school.

In response to the said training, each participating teachers from different schools were tasked to create a Work Plan on how to roll-out the Module presented during the training. As part of the plan of rolling out the material in our school, we have created a working group that will make the task identified in the work plan possible. This marked the birth of Project DAHON. The main objective of the project is a 'functional awareness campaign' for our environment.

A Battery-Free Flashlight: Invention of a Fil-Canadian Teen

News Article from abs-cbnnews.com

MANILA – Fifteen-year old Ann Makosinski of Victoria, British Columbia has capitalized on the heat radiated by the body to create light.

The Filipino-Polish-Canadian teen is one of the finalists in this year's Google Science Fair for the age group, 15-16.

Her invention: The Hallow Flashlight.

"I power the flashlight solely from the heat of the human hand," she said in one of her presentations uploaded on video sharing website, YouTube.

She used peltier tiles set on an aluminum tube that transfers or take out the heat quickly. The electricity is created by placing a palm on the peltier ties and letting the other side cool with the ambient air.

Makosinski, the only daughter of Sandra and Arthur Makosinski, said she motivated to make the project following several trips to her mother's homeland, the Philippines.

"I've been to the Philippines quite a few times, and in some of these villages I know some of the boys and girls there personally and some of them in particular have failed their grades solely because they just didn't have any light to study in," she said in the video.

She added, "imagine what it would be like if they could just have free access to light, such as my flashlight to use".

Aside from her experience in the Philippines, Makosinski was also motivated to pursue the projects in the hopes of eliminating the use of batteries in the future.

The Google Science Fair will be held in Mountain View , California on September 23, 2013. The grand winner will enjoy a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with the National Geographic Expeditions and US$50,000 in scholarship funding.

Mata ma’y lumabo’t pandinig man ay humina

Isang mabuting anak

Pagtatawanan o pagsasawaang pakinggan.

Amoy matanda, amoy lupa.
Huwag mo sana akong piliting maligo. Mahina na ang katawan ko.
Madaling magkasakit kapag nalamigan, huwag mo sana akong pandirihan.

Natatandaan mo noong bata ka pa? Pinagtyagaan kitang habulin

Pinagtyagaan kong pakinggan at intindihin

Transmutation Table: Is it really essential?

by: J. Policarpio

What is a Transmutation Table?

According to my Professor in a Computer Class during my College Days in one prominent university in Manila where I cross-enrolled that particular subject, '...there is no such thing as Transmutation Table, even if you search the internet...'. He said this to our class more  or less a decade ago. He is a foreigner.

So, what is a Transmutation Table? Here is one example of a transmutation table that I've downloaded from the internet, (it's already in the internet!)
Transmutation Table
Source: http://synoptics1.blogspot.com/2010/09/midterm-exam-grades.html

In Philippine Education,
Transmutation Table is an essential tool for Assessment of Student's Performance wherein a particular score (called the Raw Score) of a certain student in his/her output is assigned to a Percentage Grade.

Transmuted Grade is a percentage equivalent grade assigned to a raw score which is based on a certain baseline grade corresponding to a zero raw score.

Say for example, for a 50-item test, if a student  got a perfect score of 50, then his/her grade is 100. If he got 25 out of 50, then his/her grade is 80 and if he got 0 out of 50, he/she still have a grade of 70. (Refer to the table above). For this case, this grading system is said to be, base 70, since the lowest grade assigned to zero raw score is 70.

Transmuted vs Percentage Grade: Compared
Is it the same with Percentage Grade?

Percentage Grade is a percentage equivalent grade of a certain raw score based on its total number of items.

Generally, or should I say the common way of doing this is by converting a raw score to a percentage score which can be done by simple mathematics. I think, this is the right way of doing it. So for the same 50-item test, a perfect raw score of 50 has an equivalent percentage grade of 100. But if a student got 25 out of 50, then his/her percentage grade should be 50 and it follows that if he/she got zero raw score then his/her percentage grade is also zero!

Why Use a Transmutation Table?

The passing grade is the culprit. We have a mindset that a student should have a percentage grade of 75% for him/her to pass the given output and consequently the course after the term or the School Year. If you will use the percentage grade, mostly of your students will be getting a grade below the passing mark, which is 75%. To avoid doing adjustments at the end of the term or the school year, a Transmutation Table saves the day!

Can we avoid using a Transmutation Table?

I think, yes. And that is for fairness sake. We should be impartial in giving grades and it should be supported by mathematics. While transmutation table follows certain formulas, but it is based on a certain baseline grade which I think not a good practice. If a student got a Raw Score of zero, why give him/her a percentage grade of 70? Is it more logical that his/her grade is also zero?

With Curricular Reform in Philippine Education as we embrace the K-12 Curriculum, Transmutation Table of Grades is becoming obsolete. The new curriculum prescribed base 0 grading system as well as the use of authentic assessment and the use of rubrics. (DepEd Order No 73, s2012. Enclosure 4)

Reflections

Let's try to reflect why a certain student got a failing mark in a certain output.

First, the main reason of course is he/she didn't understands the lesson. He didn't study for his/her exam.

Second, the probability that he/she didn't listen to your discussion or maybe he/she was absent during that day of discussion.

And third which I think the most important consideration is the exam itself. Is your exam valid (or undergone the process of validation)? Have you consider the level of difficulty in preparing your exam? Is it parallel to your discussion or you've just recycled it from your past test papers? Have you allotted the prescribed percentage of items per level of difficulty?

Store it in the CLOUDS!

floppy disc

Naalala ko pa nga nung first year college kami nung pinaproject samen ung aming 'Aklat ng Buhay.'

USB).

Problems with File Storage? Store it in the CLOUDS!

Yes, that's right!

If you're not yet aware of Cloud Storage... and most specially if you're an educator - then you should read this!

How Cloud Storage Works
At its most basic level, a cloud storage system needs just one data server connected to the Internet. A client (e.g., a computer user subscribing to a cloud storage service) sends copies of files over the Internet to the data server, which then records the information. When the client wishes to retrieve the information, he or she accesses the data server through a Web-based interface. The server then either sends the files back to the client or allows the client to access and manipulate the files on the server itself. (discussion from howstuffworks.com)

Personal Choice
I have three personal choice out of these free cloud storage providers - the SkyDrive, Dropbox and Mediafire. Lately a friend from college recommended a newly launch cloud storage - Copy.

1. SkyDrive
SkyDrive is Microsoft's syncing solution, and in our testing, it works very smoothly. SkyDrive starts things off right by offering 7GB of free storage, which is best in class. If you move quickly (and have used SkyDrive before), you can quickly nab 25GB of total free storage space. SkyDrive really excels at syncing documents created using OneNote and other Microsoft Office products like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. SkyDrive creates an experience akin to iCloud, but for Microsoft products — except you can also edit documents in groups like you can with Box or Dropbox. And like with Drive (and Google Docs), you can edit (and create) documents for free within your browser.

SkyDrive also lets you share public links, view-only private links, and view/edit private links, which is nice to have. Unfortunately, there's no sharing yet from the Mac app and you can't download items for offline viewing on all mobile platforms. But as a whole, In the end, SkyDrive makes for an extremely well-rounded entry — especially if you forgot to sync something with it. If your home PC is turned on, you can still access all your files using SkyDrive's "Fetch" feature. (review of theverge.com)

2. Dropbox

Dropbox is the go-to solution for syncing files across multiple devices for a reason. It's a no-brainer to use, allows groups to share files with a couple clicks, and offers few settings for you to mess up. Perhaps the app's greatest strength is the API it's built on, which hundreds of developers have used to create apps that utilize Dropbox. It's right up there with Evernote as the most developer-friendly storage/syncing platforms that apps can leverage to help you access your data everywhere. But, Dropbox does have some drawbacks: It offers just 2GB of storage for free, and forces you to keep everything you need synced inside of just one folder (though you can pick which folders you want synced within your Dropbox). 3. Mediafire

MediaFire is an online storage, backup and file-sharing service offering free and premium accounts to suit the personal and business user. It offers 50 GB secure storage, 200MB maximum file size – completely free, supported by third-party advertising. Launched in 2005, MediaFire is one of the more popular services of its kind, offering “cloud storage for everyone” and attracting 60 million users annually. Offering an easy-to-use interface and the ability to create image galleries as well as sharing of documents and presentations online, the service has long retained its popularity with casual and professional users alike. 4. Copy
Copy provides 15GB FREE storage PLUS 5GB of additional free storage for every referral (both themselves and the person they introduce to Copy for each referral earns 5GB), with no limit on the total capacity they can earn. The average Copy referrer has earned well over 60GB of free storage, with the largest referrers earning space in the 10s of TBs. Copy is the easiest way to store, protect and share amazing things. It keeps your computers in sync and your files available from anywhere, even on your mobile devices. With Copy, you can also easily share files with anyone publicly or privately. Copy for companies extends the cloud storage and sharing benefits into corporate environments with user and group management and added control of proprietary company data. (from copy.com)
